The Twin Sawyer Glaciers of the Tracy Arm Fjord winds itself through the old growth – temperate rainforest of the Tongass. The word “Fjord” is a Norwegian term for a narrow inlet of the sea hemmed in by steep cliffs. Very few big ship cruises dare to venture into this remote area that is dotted with chunks of fallen glacier. This thirty mile fjord has considerable glacier pieces ranging thirty feet to hand-size chunks. The shoreline is spotted with waterfalls created by melting snowcaps falling from the 3,000-foot high granite walls. Trees sprout from rocky outcroppings that where carved by the receding and advancing glaciers. Everyone should experience this wild habitation at least once.
“…Large as our ship was, it appeared insignificant compared to the looming cliffs and the vastness of the snow covered peaks. In such a setting, thoughts about the puniness of Man and the frailty of our existence come unbidden to the mind… ”
Still only 45 miles From Juneau, the Tracy Arm Fjord will take you back in time directly to the Ice Age in just a matter moments. The habitants of the area will swim, trod or fly their way around. There are no humans that dwell here, just guests.
