This 5 hour catamaran cruise is an amazing journey into Prince William Sound. Immediately after departing Whittier the scenery of the sound begins to change. Your captain will guide you to a working salmon hatchery where you will learn about the life cycle of salmon and how they are harvested. As you cross through to the entrance of Esther Passage, keep an eye out for whales, sea lions, and sea otters; your captain is an expert at getting you a good view, without disturbing the sea otters' floating rafts. Esther Passage is a spectacular marine waterway surrounded on all sides by mountains; watch for bears feeding on the beaches as you cruise through this serene passage. Pass through Barry arm, and enter the famous Harriman Fjord, where you will see several different glaciers; blue rivers of ice snaking their way down the mountainsides.
The highlight of your cruise is an up-close view of the massive Surprise Glacier. This towering deep-blue glacier is truly one of nature's works of art; jagged towers of ice seem precariously poised to crumble off, into the cold waters below. Listen for the sounds of the glaciers's cracks and groans - a telltale sign that you may be about to witness large chunks of ice calving. Keep your camera the ready! View floating icebergs, and masses of harbor seals, drifting and sunning themselves on the floating ice.
Your return trip takes you back trhough Port Wells, past numerous waterfalls, and bird rookeries, and hopefully you will get another glimpse of the amazing marine wildlife in beautiful Prince William Sound.
